Thing Five: More Flickr fun....Jean is a stitch!

My creation

I tried out several mashups and photo creation sites. They all were easy to use, but then not so easy to upload to my blog. I finally got one to upload. These visual image creators could have multiple uses for a library, especially since many people are visual learners. Most libraries have websites that do not allow staff changes, so a blog setting is where these items would work well.

Thing Four: Explore Flickr

I created a Flickr account and took a look at the many fun options for photo editing and sharing. I brought a digital camera into the library on Wednesday August 13, 2008 and took a couple of photos of the artist that was giving a fiber art demo at the library. I posted one for you to see. This artist also has her weavings and hand embroidery work hanging on our picture rail in the library right now. I am looking forward to exploring mashups and the many creative things that Flickr can do with images.

Thing Three RSS

I read about Really Simple Syndication and also took a look at other round two "23 things" participants and their blog comments about RSS feeds. I then set up a Google Reader RSS account. I initially added some type of financial subscription to my Reader account and was almost instantly bombarded with over 220 messages. It was probably a good thing, because then I had to search around on the site to learn how to unsubscribe. I am wondering about the streamlining of information that RSS feeds claim to provide for users. Right now it just seems like one more Internet site that I have to log into and sort through and spend time reading. I did add a few of my co-workers blogs to my RSS feed. I feel that this part will be useful. Because of my new RSS knowledge, I know now exactly why a former librarian co-worker was able to respond to my last blog post almost immediately even though she lives in another State and I didn't let her know that I was posting a new message.

Thing Two

OK, I will admit that I printed several of the articles for Thing Two out on paper. I enjoy being able to write words and concepts right on the paper and underline and circle things. Some people still learn that way. I asked a couple of my 23 Things co-workers if they printed some of the articles. One person told me that she wanted to but didn't. Then I took a look at several round two blogs to see if other participants did the same. I didn't see a comment about it. At any rate, I noticed that while writing comments with a pen on the printed articles, I came up with a nice list of key words relating to Library 2.0 and Web 2.0. Here is the list:
Engaging, Interactive, Participatory, Collaboration, Conversation, Community, Connections, Presence, Feeling, Relationships, Sharing, Relevant, Convocation, Experience, Service, Product, Commodity, Engagement, Strategy, Consequences, Concept.
After reading the Web 2.0 and Library 2.0 articles I came across something called "word clouds." I found a cloud made up of Web 2.0 related words. It fits with my Thing Two learning experience, so I will link it to my blog for viewing.

Thing One

One down, twenty two to go. I am happy that I have two co-workers at my library participating in this adventure with me. We have already asked each other for assistance and advice. We have joked that our three avatars might go out for a meal or coffee together. This blog took some time to set up. But really it wasn't too hard. I am already learning a lot and it is only thing one.
